Overview

BrewMaster Brian Watson, one of the world’s most celebrated BrewMasters, engaged Nemesys to help realise a new vision for craft beer production: a fully automated brewing system that could produce virtually any style, consistently, inside restaurants and bars around the world.

Working with Natural Brew NZ, Nemesys developed the SmartBrew automation platform, enabling fresh, on-site craft beer brewed from high gravity wort streams, yeast, and dry hops within a stand-alone, intelligent system. SmartBrew now operates in venues globally, giving operators access to high-quality, house-branded beer without needing a full-time brewer on site.

  • Intelligent Brewing Platform: Development of Level 2 Grafcet Function Diagrams, PLC software, and HMI systems to control the complete SmartBrew brewing process.
  • Multi-Style Recipe Control: Automation logic designed to handle a wide range of beer styles—using the appropriate high gravity wort streams, yeast strains, and dry-hop regimes within a single, repeatable system.
  • Evolving System Architecture: Progressive upgrades from SmartBrew V6 to V7, including hardware and interface enhancements to improve usability, reliability, and future scalability.
  • Robust Automation Hardware: SmartBrew V6 utilises the EA9-T10 C-more 10" touchscreen and P3000 Automation Direct PLC, with SmartBrew V7 moving to the EA9-T15CL-R 15" touchscreen and P2000 Automation Direct PLC for improved operator experience and performance.
  • Integrated Control Stack: The system is built on Automation Direct PAC 3000, C-more HMI panels, and Automation Direct drives, delivering tightly integrated control over brewing stages from mashing and fermentation through to final product.
