Synlait Dunsandel | Plant Automation & Simulation

Overview

Synlait Milk doubled its lactoferrin manufacturing capacity at Synlait Dunsandel for the first time in the October 2018 to June 2019 season.

Lactoferrin is an iron-binding protein recognised for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. As a naturally occurring milk protein, it is commonly used in infant formula products throughout the world. In its interim results, Synlait noted that a demand and supply imbalance was strengthening global lactoferrin prices, driven by increasing use in infant formula, particularly in China.

GEA was engaged as the contract principal, with Nemesys subcontracted to provide automation (PLC and HMI) resources to code, simulate and commission changes and additions across the lactoferrin plant. The project converted the existing Schneider Quantum PLC to a new Schneider M580 and expanded the plant.

Key Features
  • Clarifiers. Coding, simulation and commissioning of changes and additions to the clarifier area.
  • IX columns. Coding, simulation and commissioning of changes and additions to the ion exchange columns.
  • Salt and CIP. Coding, simulation and commissioning of changes and additions to the salt and CIP systems.
  • PLC conversion. The existing Schneider Quantum PLC was converted to a new Schneider M580 as part of the expansion.
